Agar.io Complete Guide – 150 Tips and Strategies

I finally won

I finally won

For the free online game agar.io, here are the most amazing tips for succeeding and growing to critical mass. Add suggestions in the comments below. 😎

⚛⚛Main Game strategies⚛⚛

1.) Avoid Getting Eaten

AVOID NOOB AIMING: This is when somebody aims at you for more than 2 seconds. If you’re small, you can juke them, which is described later.

  • The lesson you learn after hours of playing is to run from everybody on screen. This gives you more time to focus on other things.

learnthe art of space”: The best thing to do is take every centimeter you can get. You need more space wherever you go. Elite players in any game harass enemies as much as they can. The bottom line is If you can’t find space, make space!

CHASE OTHERS: Do this because it makes them go away and create a distraction for other players to eat. After they get there, you can use them as a meat shield between you and enemies.

DON’T TEST PLAYERS. People ARE stupid enough to actually go after you, even though you’re too small the majority of the time. If you go near them, they’ll waste your time as they chase you around the arena forever. Avoid them at all costs.

When they chase you you’re very vulnerable, because you’re running, and somebody can just swoop in and eat you both.

All you have to do is run from everybody, and you’ll have a great time in agario.

2.) When to eat

In agar.io never hesitate. Do not wait for the perfect opportunity. You grow the fastest by eating everybody who gives you a decent amount of mass. When eating, you can simplify by remembering one rule:

If it looks like you can, you can.

If it looks like you can’t, you can’t.

Remember this as you play, and avoid calculations at all costs. As you play more, your ability to calculate will become perfect.

How to eat: The easiest way to eat somebody is within the first few milliseconds. Take this opportunity and split kill them before they can react!

If you want to get better, practice at low levels. Secondly, try this Russian training website for gamers.

Question: “How much should I eat?”

Generally, the less people on the server, the more you should be eating. If it is a lonely server at 3AM, you eat everybody in your path who looks good. You do this because splitting not only makes you faster, allowing you to sneak up on people, but also allows you to get more dots. If it’s a crowded Asian server at maximum load, you should only eat when there is a great opportunity of 2 or more. Don’t hesitate when you do find a good opportunity!

3.)Don’t love the dots.

WHY NOT: Agar.io is a game of greed, where the slightest mistake ends with disaster. The beginning of that is to love the dots. Ignore how nommable they seem. Never focus on the dots. Instead,

⚒Focus on the enemies!⚒

Dot-eating is painfully slow in comparison. Dot eating is a bad focus habit.

Dot eating is beta! You’re not a gatherer, you’re a hunter! Don’t be afraid to take a little loss over a few dots, because focusing on hunting will make you

  • more focused
  • a faster runner
  • Way more difficult to eat. When people see that you’re not going for the dots, they can’t predict your movement! They lose interest very quickly.
  • A stronger player who can eat more people and find better opportunities.

Secondly, go try playing team mode for about an hour. After going through the torture for an hour you’ll see that you simply can’t focus on the dots, and you have to run from everybody!

If you take this mentality to FFA mode, you’ll dominate the game.

4.) Swarm mentality

Here’s where you get to use your intelligence to master the game.

You can predict where players are around you.

Think of an ocean. Agario is like an ocean. Fishes are being chased around by endlessly bigger sizes of fish. What does that mean?

  • huge players can be like a drag net, pushing others into corners
  • similarly sized fish usually hang out together
  • there are areas of the game where only big fish can swim
  • small fish attract bigger fish
  • when a big fish gets wounded, all the sharks swoop in
  • when you see a big player, you know that he’s scaring slightly smaller fish away who are afraid of him

knowing that, try to use your intelligence to figure out the bigger picture. It’s hard to explain, but you can start by sticking to the safe areas- the viruses. The sharks are too big to chase prey there.

You might try sticking with fishes your size, especially in empty areas. They can alert you to larger enemies.

  • Stick to people that are clearly too large to be interested.
  • when you’re small, your enemies are chasing you because they ran away from somebody first!

5.) How to have good positioning

After playing on a private server where things are sped up x3 sometimes and the server fits around 10 people, I learned incredible positioning skills. Basically it can be boiled down to what follows:

  • Run from everybody
  • Pressure other players when possible. This creates a diversion and a bubble around you for protection
  • Run from everybody! ➡ ➡
  • Don’t love the candy (dots)

Secondary Game Strategies

This section covers supplementary aspects of playing.

1.) Practice

Practice your aiming on other players so you get better.

2.) Areas of the game

Think about water. These movement patterns kind of imitate water when it flows around in a box.

agario movement patterns

agario movement patterns

THE WALLThis is the second most dangerous area of the game. You can gang up on people finding themselves between a rock and a hard place.

THE CORNERThis is the number one most dangerous place. NEVER go here unless you’re number 1, because you’re just asking for trouble.

THE MAIN STAGEFor some reason, the largest blobs stay at the top, and the smaller ones go to the bottom. Why? I don’t know.

When you’re starting to get on the top 10, you should head out into the open so you can find a good opportunity to eat a mega blob.

☣THE VIRUSES☣:

  1. They keep the larger fish off your tail
  2. You can hide inside them
  3. You can hang around them, and run around them when you’re in trouble
  4. You can put yourself next to them to make yourself unattractive

3.) The Power of W

W is an extremely useful tool, and can be used for any of the following:

  • making alliances
  • shooting them into an empty space, to gain a speed advantage
  • as a distraction, or peace offering
  • one of my favorites: bait!

When you’re split into 4 pieces, go in a corner, because there’s an easy way to get out of it. Aim so that 3 of your blobs shoot into 1, and that 1 shoots at the wall. All the mass should go into 1 blob. Now you’re too big to get eaten again.

Important: w shoots at 80% efficiency

4.) Positioning

This will become pretty obvious as you play, but some positional strategies include:

  • Use your combining action to eat an unaware player
  • Use super-massive players as a shield, or hiding zone (they won’t be interested in you!)
  • Slip between large blobs to avoid getting eaten, when they can’t fire at each other
  • Loiter as close as possible to viruses, making yourself unattractive
  • You can slide between two pieces of a larger player
  • You can slide a virus between your two pieces if you’re pro

5.) Dot Training

One favorite strategy of mine is to use the dots to control the game. For example, try the following tactics:

  • go in the white spaces, so that it will look more attractive to go near you (when they see all the dots you’re leaving behind)
  • go in the white spaces so you look less attractive (so they go for the dots instead)
  • let others eat the dots when they’re chasing you, so they don’t feel like they need to eat you as much. I noticed people get desperate when there aren’t any dots around.
  • leave some dots behind, so that people can come on screen and eat them. (leave them as a trap)
  • make dot pathways so that other players will go on them instead of chasing you.
  • expect enemies to come on screen where there are the most dots
  • If you eat all the dots in the area, leaving only white space behind, you can be sure that nobody will follow you.

6.) List of Game Mechanics

Finally, answers to these questions! 😀

size required to eat somebody: you must be 25% bigger, meaning a diameter roughly 11% larger

how many times to feed virus: 7 times

how big do you need to be to be split by a virus: 150 mass to be split by it

how big to hide inside a virus: less than 130 mass

how much mass do you drain per second: at 1900, you drain about 20 per second. That means it’s nearly impossible to sustain yourself in dots alone at this point.

how big to eat a virus completely: You must be 150 to split over it. that means, you need another 150 to devour it, so a little over 300. (if you’re max split, you devour it and get a size increase rather than being split.)

agario max split number: you can be split into a maximum of 16 pieces.

agario maximum mass: The maximum size in agario is 22,500 for a single cell. That is for just 1 cell. If you have 16 cells, therefore, the max for mass would be 16 pieces * 22,500 mass = 360,000. However, as soon as two of your cells join, you would lose all that mass, because the cap for a single cell is 22,500!

score: the score is simply your top size achieved so far.

amount of mass sent with w: It is relative to your size, starting at 16 and increasing.

minimum mass to be able to split: currently 35, and you waste 1 mass, giving you 14 and 14.

fuze time: minimum of 30 seconds, but it is more if you are larger. The exact formula is

t = 30 + 0.02m

where t is time, and m is mass.

Basically, you just start out at 30 seconds, and add another 10 seconds for every 500 mass. Fuze times are therefore as follows:

10 — 30 seconds

500 — 40 seconds

1000 — 50 seconds

1500 — 60 seconds

2000 — 1 minute 10 seconds

2500 — 1 minute 20 seconds

3000 — 1 minute 30 seconds

4000 — 1 minute 50 seconds

5000 — 2 minutes 10 seconds

10000 — 3 minutes 50 seconds

20000 — 7 minutes 10 seconds

Awesome Tips and Tricks

1.) How to juke

1.) Run away in a straight line until the enemy engages in “noob aiming mode”.

2.) Make yourself slightly offset from their trajectory

3.) Right when they fire, juke them by going at a right angle to the shot.

Example: They’re chasing you to the left. Run away until they enter noob aiming mode. Make yourself slightly lower than them. Right when they fire, juke them by moving down, out of the path of the shot.

Works every time.

2.) The trap of greed

W can be used for good or evil. You can use w to lure people in, and the rewards are great. Ironically, you get your bait back!

Once a guy spat out all his mass on the other side of him. When I went for it, he got there first. He ate my half, then split killed my other half! He then made it onto the top 10 just like that!

3.) The wall trap

Walls are terrifying and deadly. If you’re big, consider hanging around them until some poor blob finds himself between a rock and a hard place.

4.) How to get away

When you have no other choice, split out of there as far as possible. It’s better to lose half your mass than all of it!

One thing that’s awesome, is that when you split it serves as a major distraction. Even if they’ll still want to eat you, you can split and confuse them, giving you enough time to escape.

5.) Splitting distance

Little known fact: the further your cursor is away from the screen, the further you go when you split!

6.)☣Virus☣ Splitting

Some newbies might not know this, but the green spikes are called viruses. You can feed them, and they multiply in the direction that you were shooting. I like to feed one until it’s about to pop, then wait as a trap.

7.) Learn to control the controls

Most players aren’t conscious of the slight lag the game puts on the mouse controls. When you move back and forth, you can see it in action. It’s only a fraction of a second, but very important. This slight lag is why you find yourself hurling into the enemy without being able to stop.

If you learn to control it, you can predict when that is going to happen and prevent a collision.

8.) Be conscious of player’s direction

Everybody loves dots. I love dots. Nom nom.

Enemies always follow the path with the most dots!

All you have to do is look for whatever dots they’re going for, and you can eat them with no problems.

9.) Fuze quickly

Just hold the cursor between the two cells and it merges the fastest.

If you have a lot of cells and you want to merge them, you can use w to make them smaller. When they’re smaller, they’ll then fuze faster into your main blob.

11.) Stay away from☣viruses☣ when you’re big.

Really. Don’t even risk it. These stupid things just have a natural way of taking out the top player when they’re near.

12.) Splitting through others

If somebody is split in two, and they’re trying to keep their smaller cell away from you, you can do this simple trick. If you know your split will pass through the big one, you can go for the small one they’re hiding from you without fear.

13.) Save your double

Hold off joining your doubles so that you can have a speed advantage. Sneak up on people, then fuse and eat somebody.

14.) Colors and names

I’m not sure if everyone will agree, but I find that using no names, no color, and dark mode makes it easier to focus. I like doing either depending on what mood I’m in.

It makes it easier to focus when you’re small, but no names no color dark mode makes it hard to focus when you’re huge and you can see half the map.

Guide from 10 to 3000

Something this guide was really lacking: a detailed walk-through!

Starting out

The first thing I always do on competitive maps is either look for the #1 blob and stick to him, or go into a virus field. Try to move in the same direction as him, so you can get more dots than behind him. Do this until you’re around 3 to 500.

Middle Weight

You’re still not big enough to go out on your own, so you can do one of two things:

  1. Stick to the #1 and become his friend
  2. Find happy hunting grounds

Happy hunting grounds are areas like the corners with lots of viruses, where the megas and general blobs will be too scared of to enter. There should be many people smaller than you in this area.

I ALWAYS go to these quiet areas to get my mass up before I’m ready to head out onto the main stage.

Do this step until you start peeking onto the top 10 list. Then you’re ready!

edit:

After playing for a long time, I’ve learned that if you just avoid everybody around you like crazy, you can easily grow very quickly without trouble. Now I just go into predator mode and hunt people from the start until the next step.

Mega Size

Once you’re around 1-2k, you can head out into the open to begin feasting. Basically you want to be peeking onto the top 10 list. You should be mainly trying to look for good opportunities. Some opportunities could be:

  • a wounded mega
  • a blob of 4 or more, and the people chasing it
  • someone running out of space
  • virus exploits
  • squishing people
  • tricking people

Frankly, the only way you’re going to make it to #1 is to devour a mega sizer.

How to play as top blob

Your main source of energy will come from squishing enemies. Don’t be afraid to chase people endlessly- they’ll run into☣viruses☣ or another player soon!

Importantly, start investing in some friends with w. Feeding one person until they feel like your minion slave gives you a loyal ally that will make virus exploits, give you the mass in case of an eclipse attack, or draw in people as bait. This is awesome, but sometimes you waste mass.

Secondly, watch out for virus exploits!

Thirdly, Blob #2 will be chasing you once you split.

The best areas for the number 1 to hang out is at the top of the map and in the walls or corners.

On most maps you’ll find random areas with a huge amount of players in them. These are basically random and you should be hunting to find them.

When you find an area with a lot of players, soon you’ll see somebody running away and getting squished. Swoop in and take them all out at the same time!

Teaming

Finally adding a teaming section!

To start out, there are many horrible teammates in agar.io. So far, most people don’t know about teaming.

WHEN TO TEAM: Frankly, teaming is terrible at low levels. Even at around 500-1000, unless you find somebody who knows what they’re doing, you won’t be getting anywhere. Finding a good teammate is important. If you can’t find somebody, don’t worry about it! You’re most likely better off waiting until you’re on the top 5 or 10, because a bad teammate will only drag you down! You should start teaming as soon as you know it will be worth it, and when you found a player who shows they are very good.

FINDING A GOOD TEAMMATE: Many people will simply reject your request, or not know what to do, which is why I personally avoid asking for alliances. Don’t bother helping somebody out when they’re in an eclipse situation, because as of right now they often blow you off and steal your mass, even trying to eat you! If you find a very good player, then you can try cautiously asking for an alliance.

The best way to find a good team in agar.io is to simply wait for somebody to team with you. Other players who ask for alliances are the only ones who know how to be a good teammate. They are the best teammates, and they know what they’re doing! The “w=team” players are good about half the time, so cautiously try them out.

PLAYING AS A TEAM: The #1 mistake people make in teams is thinking that they have to share all the mass. Actually, teaming works best when you don’t completely share. The reason? Pressing w wastes 20% of the mass, and splitting wastes 10% of the mass.

A bad teammate will be constantly pressing w to make you equal. In the end, you’re often smaller than when you started! Instead of pressing w, try double splitting.

If you can, allow yourself to merge on your own. That way, you ensure 100% of the mass is saved. Of course, there are times you want to let your buddy eat it. In general, give the mass to your team when you want to try and eat somebody again, otherwise, save it. Decide for yourself when it would be better to share or save mass based on the situation and environment.

RULE #2: The best part of teaming is doing an eclipse attack then sharing mass to make them big enough. This can be extremely tricky. The secret is to use 100% of your concentration to stay EXACTLY on top of the enemy. Your teammate will pick up on the queue. Don’t let yourself be distracted, just focus 100% on staying on top of the enemy and your team won’t let you down.

BEING THE SAME SIZE ISN’T ALWAYS BETTER: Actually, this is one of the biggest signs of being a team. When you see two blobs the same size just hanging around, RUN! They’re almost certainly a team. Knowing that, people will be scared of you. If you can, make it look like you’re not a team.

WHEN TO EAT: Always. The best teams eat everything worthwhile around them and grow extremely fast. Don’t be afraid to double split if it’s worth it! You can even use the vulnerable situation as a bait to lure people in. Again, you might want to eat less on more competitive maps, but that’s questionable.

AGARIO TEAM CODE

“Want to team?”: Moving in circles (dancing) / feeds you a lot

Go that way”: Shoot mass to lure team in that direction

“Give me mass”: send 1 to signal when you’re attacking somebody

Names

I’ve seen many names in agar.io. You know you want to name your character “plzfeed”, but some part of you says that’s just dirty. Others don’t even care about shame.

I might be one of those people.

As stated by DoktorBBQ in the comments, having an original name is beneficial for making friends. This is important because elite players always team. If you don’t care about that, I have come up with the following analysis:

1.) Having no name is best

First of all, people seem way less likely to go for you when you have no name. I’m not sure why that is. It works even more so than naming myself something disgusting, like “puke”.

For some reason, people can’t focus on anything that doesn’t have a name.

Secondly, it makes the game easier to play. Not having to worry what people think about your name is pretty big, and gives you a little subconscious advantage that will let you fire just a little bit faster.

EDIT:

I found more strategic names that actually work even better than this. Give them a try:

  • hesitation
  • too small
  • too big

2.) feedplz does work

Though you might want to mix it up a bit. Some notable examples are:

  • feed for team green
  • feed if you like X
  • feed the king (if you’re big)
  • w=team
  • w=wont eat you

Similar Game Shoutout

Lastly, an online game that I just have to give a major shout out to is EVE online 😀

EVE ONLINE > AGARIO !

If you’re good enough at it, you can make so much in-game that you play for free. EVE is unique in that you can earn play time by buying it in game.

This game is epically called “The game of spreadsheets”. It is a mathematicians dream land. Calculating the minimum effort for maximal results is something familiar to many gamers. It’s the mother of all strategy games. Check it out, you’ll love it way more than simple agario! It’s so awesome I just had to mention
